Until Windows 7, Microsoft allowed you to initiate the operating system in safe mode by simply pressing the F8 key while booting the OS. However, this functionality in Windows 8 is another shortcut. Now you must press “Shift + F8” to access the screen that lets you choose between normal system boot or safe mode.

For those who do not like keyboard shortcuts, there is the option to enable a menu to be displayed at boot time of the system, allowing you to choose between normal loading the OS or with the particulars provided in recovery mode.

Below, you can see all the steps to enable this menu and make the access safe mode of Windows 8 a lot simpler and faster. The whole process is performed using only tools native operating system, eliminating the installation of any external application.

Steps

1) Go to the search screen of Windows 8, type the word “cmd” and wait for the result to be displayed.

2) Click the right mouse button on the item that appears at the far left of the screen, choosing “Run as administrator” option, shown at the bottom.

3) The command prompt window will appear. Enter the following statement:

> bcdedit / enum / v

4) When the command finishes running, several system information will be displayed. Locate the item “Windows Boot Loader”, especially the “identifier” field.

5) Now you need to make a copy of the so called boot loader. The idea is to edit the settings without losing the original content (in the case of giving a problem). To do this, type the following command at the prompt:

> bcdcedit / copy {identifier} / d “Windows 8 (Safe Mode)”

In place of “identifier”, enter the data recorded in step number 4, as shown in the image below.

6) Finally, it’s time to set some new menu options displayed at system boot. To do this, use the shortcut “Windows Key + R” and in the window that appears, type “msconfig.exe” by pressing the “OK” button.

7) The system settings screen is displayed. Go to the “Boot” tab and select the “Windows 8 (Safe Mode)” option.

8) Now just mark items “Safe boot”, located in “Boot options”, and “Make all boot settings permanent”.

9) To finalize the process, click “Apply” then “OK”.

To check if everything went as expected, you must restart the system. If you have been properly configured, the options menu of Windows will be shown before the login screen. Cool this option is that you can use your mouse to select the desired item.
