If you want to know how to make a histogram in excel. So here in this article, we are going to teach you how to make a histogram in excel.
A histogram is a graphical representation of a variable in the form of bars where the size of each bar is proportional to the frequency of the value it is representing. The horizontal axis of the histogram has the values of the variables and the vertical axis the frequencies.

Table of Contents
For this example, we will assume that we have collected the ages of a group of people who have responded to a survey. In total I have a list of 100 people with their respective ages:
In order to create the histogram in Excel, it is necessary to group the data by classes. By classes, we refer to the different “categories” in which the data will be classified, which in our example are ages 18, 19, 20, etc. The goal of the histogram is to graphically represent how many items belong to each of these classes.
If you don’t know the classes of the input data, you can make a copy of the data range and use the Remove Duplicates command to get a list of unique values. In this case, I know in advance that the range of ages collected in the survey is between 18 and 25 so I will enter it manually in column C:
HISTOGRAM TOOL IN EXCEL
In order to classify the data for the histogram in Excel, I must start by activating the Analysis Tools which is an Excel add-in. We must go to the File tab> Options> Add-ins> Excel Add-ins.
After activating the Analysis Tools we must go to the Data tab and in the Analysis group, click on the Data Analysis command to obtain the following dialog box:
Select the Histogram option which will allow us to specify the necessary arguments to be able to classify our data.
As Input range, I will specify the range that contains the ages (not including the column title) and in the Class Range box, I will place the range of cells with the previously created classes. I make sure to select the On a new sheet option and check the Create chart option. Pressing the OK button will create a new sheet with the histogram.
FORMAT HISTOGRAM IN EXCEL
To improve the appearance of the newly created Histogram chart a bit, I will apply some additional actions. First I will remove the option “and greater …” from the data table so that said option does not appear in the graph and secondly I will remove the legend from the graph.
Finally, I will remove the spaces between the columns of the graph. To do this, you can right-click on any of the columns and select the Format data series option, and in the Series Options section set the Interval Width to 0%.
After applying this last adjustment we will have a histogram in Excel like the one shown at the beginning of this article. More on Microsoft.
